SVG to DXF converter
Drop an SVG and get a clean DXF at the right size. Your laser or CAM software opens it without surprises.
Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
How to use it
1Drop your SVG
Drop the file or choose it. It is read in your browser and never uploaded.
2Check the size
Real size uses the SVG's own width and height. If a pixel-sized file comes out at 75%, turn on File was made at 72 DPI, or type the width you want.
3Set curves and layers
Curve quality sets how closely segments follow curves. Keep circles and arcs on for CAM. Layers by stroke colour keep cut and score lines apart.
4Download the DXF
Check the preview and the size in millimetres or inches, then download an AutoCAD R12 DXF with its units set.
To convert SVG to DXF, drop the SVG into the converter above, check that the size reads right, and download the DXF. Curves follow the original to within the tolerance you set, circles and circular arcs stay true circles and arcs, and the units are written into the file, so programs that read them, LightBurn among them, open it at the size you drew. Nothing is uploaded.
SVG vs DXF
Both are vector formats, made for different jobs. SVG describes artwork for screens; DXF describes geometry for CAD.
| SVG | DXF | |
|---|---|---|
| Made for | Browsers and design apps | CAD, CAM and machine software |
| Size | Width and height in mm, inches or pixels | Drawing units, named by $INSUNITS |
| Curves | Béziers and elliptical arcs | Lines, arcs, circles, polyline bulges, splines |
| Colour | Any stroke and fill, gradients | Layer colours from the AutoCAD Color Index |
| Text | Live text in a font | Text entities that need the same fonts |
| Y axis | Points down | Points up |
The converter bridges each row. It resolves styles, CSS classes, groups, transforms and reused symbols, flips y, and turns each colour or group into a DXF layer.
The 96 vs 72 DPI trap
An SVG that gives its size in millimetres or inches converts exactly. One sized in pixels needs a rule for how big a pixel is. The CSS standard sets 96 pixels per inch, and Inkscape has used 96 since version 0.92. LightBurn's documentation lists 72 DPI as Adobe Illustrator's default, and a 72 DPI file read at 96 comes out at 75% of its size.
The converter reads pixels at 96 per inch and turns on File was made at 72 DPI by itself when the file says it came from Illustrator. If a part still measures wrong, flip the switch, or choose Set width and type the size you need. LightBurn and xTool Studio both have an SVG DPI setting for the same reason.
Text, images and clipping
A DXF from this tool holds lines, arcs and circles. Anything else is listed above the preview:
- Text must become outlines first. In Inkscape, select it and choose Path, Object to Path (Shift+Ctrl+C).
- Raster images cannot be cut as vectors. Trace them with Path, Trace Bitmap, or engrave them as images in your laser software.
- Clip paths and masks are ignored, so clipped artwork is written whole. Release the clip in your editor if only the visible part should be cut.
Which programs want which format
| Program | SVG | DXF | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| LightBurn | Yes | Yes | 96 or 72 DPI setting for SVG; can auto-detect DXF units |
| xTool Studio | Yes | Yes | Successor to xTool Creative Space; auto-detects DXF units |
| Glowforge | Yes | Premium plan | JPG, PNG and PDF too |
| Cricut Design Space | Yes | Desktop only | SVGs up to 5,000 paths, all imported as cut lines |
| Vectric VCarve | On the product page | Yes | The help lists DXF, EPS, AI and PDF imports |
| Autodesk Fusion | Insert, Insert SVG | Insert, Insert DXF | Only the DXF import asks for units |

Convert SVG to DXF in Inkscape
- Open the SVG and convert any text with Path, Object to Path.
- Choose File, Save a Copy (Shift+Ctrl+Alt+S), so your SVG stays as it is.
- Pick Desktop Cutting Plotter (AutoCAD DXF R14) (*.dxf). An R12 version is listed too, with no options.
- In the R14 options, keep Use Document unit as base unit or pick a base unit, then choose whether to use LWPOLYLINE output and whether to flatten Béziers. Inkscape labels its ROBO-Master spline option as one that may distort some shapes.
This converter does the same job without the dialog: arcs stay exact arcs, other curves become short straight segments within your tolerance, and the layers follow your colours or groups.
Other conversions
Going the other way? The DXF to SVG converter opens CAD files for Cricut, Glowforge and Inkscape. Before you cut joints, size the slots with the laser kerf calculator. To turn a 3D model into cut lines, use STL to SVG, and to turn an SVG into a printable part, SVG to STL.
Questions
How do I convert SVG to DXF?
Drop the SVG into the converter on this page, check the size, and download the DXF. It runs in your browser, keeps circles and arcs exact and writes the units into the file. In Inkscape you can also use File, Save a Copy and pick Desktop Cutting Plotter (AutoCAD DXF R14).
What is the difference between DXF and SVG?
Both are vector formats. SVG is a web graphics format that also stores fills, gradients, text and effects, with y pointing down. DXF is AutoCAD's exchange format: lines, arcs, circles, polylines and splines on layers, in drawing units, which is what CAD and CAM programs work in.
Is a DXF a vector file?
Yes. A DXF stores geometry as the coordinates of lines, arcs, circles and curves, not as pixels, so it scales without losing detail.
Why does my DXF come out the wrong size?
Usually pixels. The CSS standard and Inkscape count 96 pixels per inch, so a file drawn at 72 per inch reads 25% small. Turn on File was made at 72 DPI or use Set width. SVGs sized in mm or inches convert exactly.
Will text in my SVG convert to DXF?
No. The DXF holds outlines only, so text elements are listed as left out. Convert text to paths first: in Inkscape, select it and choose Path, Object to Path.
Should I use DXF or SVG in LightBurn?
Either works: LightBurn imports SVG and DXF, along with AI, PDF and PLT files. For SVGs it has a 96 or 72 DPI import setting, and for DXFs it can auto-detect the units when the file includes them, as these files do.
Can Cricut and Glowforge use DXF files?
Cricut Design Space uploads DXF on desktop, not in its iOS and Android apps. Glowforge takes DXF on its Premium plan only. Both take SVG everywhere, so for them SVG is the simpler choice.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser and the file never leaves your device.
