This lantern is one of our favourite quick laser projects: decorated side panels, a pitched roof with bats and a black cat, a handle ring, a door panel that opens for the light and a slotted base, cut from 3 mm plywood. Put an LED tea light inside and the cutouts throw Halloween shadows across the room.

Before you cut
- Measure your sheet. "3 mm" plywood is often 2.7 to 3.2 mm. The slots are drawn for 3 mm.
- Measure your kerf. A one-minute test with the kerf calculator tells you the offset to use, so the slots grip without forcing.
- Check settings. Start from the plywood values in the settings finder and run a small test cut.

These are starting points. Adjust for your machine and plywood.
Assembly
- Lay out the base and push the side panels into its slots.
- Fit the corners so the panels lock together, leaving the door panel free to open.
- Add the roof panels, then the roof cap.
- Slot the handle ring through the top.
- Add a drop of glue at the base and roof if you want it permanent, keeping glue off the door.
Make it yours
- Engrave a name on the base before cutting.
- Back the cutouts with orange tissue or translucent paper for colored light.
- Stain or paint the panels black before cutting for a spooky contrast with the burnt edges.

Frequently asked questions
What material thickness is the lantern designed for?
3 mm plywood or MDF. If your sheet is thicker or thinner, adjust the slot widths or set a kerf offset so the panels still fit.
Do I need glue?
The panels slot together, but a little wood glue on the base and roof joints makes the lantern sturdier.
Can I use a real candle inside?
Use an LED tea light. An open flame inside a thin wooden lantern is a fire risk.
Which software opens the files?
SVG opens in LightBurn, xTool's software, Glowforge, Inkscape and Illustrator. EPS suits Illustrator and CorelDRAW, and PDF works as a printable preview or an import format in many programs.
