Depthue Studio
3D QR code generator: QR code plates and keychains to 3D print
The Depthue Studio 3D QR code generator turns a link, text or Wi-Fi login into a printable plate: up to 500 characters, error correction L to H, modules 0.6 to 4 mm. The code can stand up, be cut in, or sit flush as separate shells for a two colour print. It is a part in a project, so you can put it on a sign or a box lid and export STL or 3MF.
Free in your browser, no card. Files stay on your device until you save to the cloud.

The short answer
- Up to 500 characters of URL, text or Wi-Fi string, error correction L, M, Q or H, and the smallest QR version that fits.
- Modules 0.6 to 4 mm, a quiet zone of 1 to 6 modules, raised, engraved or flush for a two colour print, and a keychain hole up to 8 mm.
- The plate is a part in a project: join it to a sign or a box lid, add holes, then export STL or 3MF.
- Content
- 1 to 500 characters: URL, text or Wi-Fi string, encoded as UTF-8
- Error correction
- L (7%), M (15%, default), Q (25%) or H (30%)
- Module size
- 0.6 to 4 mm, 1.5 mm by default; a note below 1 mm
- Quiet zone
- 1 to 6 modules on every side, 2 by default
- Plate
- 1 to 6 mm thick (2 mm by default), corner radius 0 to 10 mm
- Code
- Raised or engraved 0.4 to 3 mm (1 mm by default), or flush as separate shells for two colours
- Keychain hole
- 0 to 8 mm; a tab is added above the code
- Export
- STL, 3MF, OBJ, GLB, PLY, or an SVG or DXF outline
How to 3D print a QR code
- 1
Add a QR code plate
Open the 3D QR code generator, or Add, QR code plate in any project. A 43.5 mm plate for depthue.com lands on the plate.
- 2
Type the content
Paste a link, text or a Wi-Fi string. The inspector shows the module count and the plate size as you type.
- 3
Size and style it
Set the module size, quiet zone and error correction, then pick raised, engraved or flush, and a keychain hole if you want one.
- 4
Export
Export STL or 3MF. Change filament at the top of the plate for a raised code, or split a flush code into parts in a multi material slicer.

Size comes from the module
A QR code is a grid of square modules. Studio picks the smallest QR version that holds your content at the error correction you choose, then multiplies by the module size. The plate is the code plus a quiet zone on every side:
Plate width = (modules + 2 x quiet zone) x module size
Sizes from the generator at 1.5 mm modules, a 2 module quiet zone and error correction M:
| Content | Modules | Plate |
|---|---|---|
| https://depthue.com (19 characters) | 25 x 25 | 43.5 mm |
| A 49 character Wi-Fi string | 33 x 33 | 55.5 mm |
| A 53 character song link | 33 x 33 | 55.5 mm |
| 500 characters, the maximum | 85 x 85 | 133.5 mm |
Higher error correction adds modules: the same depthue.com link is 29 x 29 at H. A shorter link makes a smaller code, which matters most on a keychain.
Raised, engraved or flush
- Raised modules stand 0.4 to 3 mm on the plate. Print the plate light, change filament once at the top of the plate, and the code prints dark. With the defaults the change is at 2 mm.
- Engraved modules are cut in. The depth is capped so 0.6 mm of plate stays under the code. Fill the pockets with paint, or engrave a light code into a dark plate.
- Flush modules sit in pockets as their own pieces, level with the top. The default code becomes 20 shells: the plate plus 19 module pieces, 0.02 mm clear in 1.22 mm pockets. Load the file in a multi material slicer, split it into parts, and give the module pieces the second filament.
Modules that touch only at a corner get a tiny bridge, so the code is a valid closed solid that passes the edge check instead of a mesh your slicer has to repair.
A part, not just a file
The free QR code to STL tool is the fastest way to one QR plate, with no account. Use the Studio part when the code goes on something:
- A sign with a code. Add a sign and a QR plate, set the plate thin, place it on the sign and join the two with a boolean.
- A box with a code on the lid. Put a link to a manual or a reorder page on a box with lid.
- A QR code keychain. Set a keychain hole and the plate gets a tab above the code. For a name on a tag instead, use the keychain generator.
The plate keeps its settings in the project, so you can change the link later and it rebuilds. A boolean keeps each object where you placed it.
Make it scan
Keep the quiet zone at 2 modules or more, print dark on light, and avoid silk or translucent filament, which lowers the contrast. Test the scan on the slicer preview or the first print before you run a batch. For a laser instead of a printer, the QR code generator for laser engraving gives vector SVG and DXF files.
Questions
Will a 3D printed QR code scan?
Yes, with enough contrast and big enough modules. Print dark modules on a light plate and keep modules at 1 mm or more with a 0.4 mm nozzle. The generator adds a note when modules go under 1 mm.
How big is a 3D printed QR code?
Plate width is (modules + 2 x quiet zone) x module size. The default depthue.com link is 25 modules, so at 1.5 mm with a 2 module quiet zone the plate is 43.5 mm square.
Can I make a QR code keychain?
Yes. Set the keychain hole from 2 to 8 mm and a tab is added above the code. A 53 character song link at 1 mm modules with a 4 mm hole makes a 37 x 45 mm tag.
How is this different from the free QR code to STL tool?
The free tool makes one QR plate file fast, with no account. The Studio part lives in a project: you can place it on a sign or a box lid, join them, add more parts and edit it later.
Can it make barcodes?
No. The generator makes QR codes only.
Is the 3D QR code generator free?
Free to start. A free account includes 50 credits a month. Adding the plate is 2 credits, changing its settings is free, each operation is 1 and an export 5. Paid plans start at $5 a month for 1,200 credits.
