Sign generator: name plates, house numbers and desk signs to 3D print

The Depthue Studio sign generator makes house number signs, desk name plates, door signs and name tags from text. Type up to three lines in one of 17 bundled fonts, set the letter height from 4 to 100 mm, and the plate follows the text with the margin you choose, with two or four mounting holes and an optional frame. It exports as one closed solid, STL or 3MF.

A 126 x 77 mm house number sign with 42 engraved in 60 mm Archivo Black letters and four mounting holes, in Depthue Studio with the sign settings in the inspector

The short answer

  • Up to three lines of 40 characters in 17 bundled fonts, letters 4 to 100 mm high, raised or engraved.
  • A rounded or oval plate sized to the text plus a margin of 2 to 40 mm, with none, two or four mounting holes from 2 to 10 mm.
  • Holes never cut into the letters and engravings always leave 0.8 mm of plate, and the sign comes out as one closed solid.

How to make a sign or name plate

  1. 1

    Add a sign

Open the sign generator, or Add, Sign in any project. A WELCOME sign with two holes lands on the plate.

  2. 2

    Type the lines

Type up to three lines and pick a font. The plate grows around the text as you type.

  3. 3

    Size and mount it

Set the letter height, margin and plate thickness, then the holes: none, two or four, 2 to 10 mm across.

  4. 4

    Export

Export STL or 3MF. For two colours, change filament at the top of the plate.

The Depthue Studio export dialog with STL selected, a 16-bit height map option and an outline for laser and CNC, over a blurred name sign
Export a sign as STL or 3MF for printing, a height map for a laser's 3D mode, or an SVG or DXF outline for cutting.

Signs from text, sized in mm

The sign starts from what you type. Every line is centred, the lines sit at the spacing you set, and the plate is the text block plus the margin on every side, never smaller than 30 x 15 mm. Real sizes from the generator:

SignSettingsSize
Door signWELCOME, 14 mm letters, two holes (default)74.8 x 30.3 x 4.2 mm
House number42, 80 mm letters, four holes, 5 mm plate106 x 96.4 x 6.2 mm
Desk name plateTwo lines at 12 mm, no holes, frame96.2 x 43.8 x 4.2 mm

Letter height is the height of the capitals. Line spacing is a multiple of it: 1.3 by default, 0.8 for tight lines, up to 2.5 for wide ones.

Plate, holes and frame

  • Rounded plates get corners up to 12 mm, scaled to the margin. Oval plates are an ellipse sized to keep the text and margin inside.
  • Two holes sit at the left and right ends; on an oval, just past the letters, and the plate grows until each hole has 1.5 mm of material around it. Four holes sit in the corners.
  • Holes need room, so the margin is raised to the hole size plus 3 mm when holes are on. A hole that would still cut into a letter is dropped, with a note.
  • Frame adds a raised rim around the edge, 1 to 2.5 mm wide depending on the margin, as high as the letters.

Raised or engraved

Raised letters stand 0.4 to 5 mm on the plate. For a two colour sign on one nozzle, print the plate in one colour and change filament at the top of the plate (3 mm with the defaults); the letters and frame print in the second colour.

Engraved letters are cut into the plate and capped so 0.8 mm stays underneath. Fill them with paint, or print a light plate and engrave deep for shadow.

Fonts for every kind of sign

The 17 bundled fonts are open licensed, so the letters can go into products you sell. Anton and Bebas Neue for bold house numbers, Zilla Slab and Alfa Slab One for door signs, Cinzel Decorative for roman capitals, Pacifico and Lobster for script names, Rye for a western look. Stardos Stencil keeps the middles of letters like O and A bridged, which matters when the sign is cut out rather than printed.

After the sign

The sign is a normal solid. Add a QR code plate for a menu or a Wi-Fi login and join them, add more holes, or engrave a line on the back with the STL editor. Export an SVG or DXF outline for a laser or CNC, or a 16-bit height map for a laser's 3D engraving mode. For loose 3D letters without a plate, the free text to STL tool makes a single file.

Questions

How do I make a house number sign?

Type the number on line 1, set the letter height and pick four holes. The number 42 with 80 mm letters, four holes and a 5 mm plate makes a 106 x 96.4 mm sign. For outdoors, PETG or ASA hold up better in sun than PLA.

How do I make a desk name plate?

Type the name on line 1 and the job title on line 2, set holes to none and turn on the frame. ALEX MORGAN over HEAD OF DESIGN at 12 mm makes a 96.2 x 43.8 mm plate. The sign is flat, so stand it in a holder, or add a box shape as a foot and join the two with a boolean.

Can I use it as a name tag generator?

Yes. Use small letters, one or two lines and no holes, then glue a pin or a magnet to the back. For a tag on a key ring, the keychain generator adds a ring hole.

Raised or engraved letters?

Raised letters stand 0.4 to 5 mm proud and make a two colour sign with one filament change. Engraved letters are cut in, capped so 0.8 mm of plate stays under them, and can be filled with paint.

What happens if a hole hits the letters?

The margin is raised to the hole size plus 3 mm to make room. If a hole would still cut into a letter, it is left out and you get a note to raise the margin.

Is the sign generator free?

Free to start. A free account includes 50 credits a month. Adding a sign is 2 credits, changing its settings is free, each operation is 1 and an export 5. Paid plans start at $5 a month for 1,200 credits.
