Keychain generator: custom name keychains to 3D print

The Depthue Studio keychain generator turns a name into a printable keychain: up to 24 characters in one of 17 bundled fonts, on a rounded, pill, circle, dog tag or heart plate with a ring hole. Letters are raised or engraved, the plate grows to fit the text, and the result is one closed solid you can export as STL or 3MF.

Free in your browser, no card. Files stay on your device until you save to the cloud.

The short answer

  • Up to 24 characters in 17 bundled fonts, on a rounded, pill, circle, dog tag or heart plate, 10 to 60 mm high and 2 to 8 mm thick.
  • The width follows the text (at least 25 mm) unless you fix it, and the letters always fit on the plate.
  • Raised letters 0.4 to 3 mm, or engraved with 0.8 mm of tag always left underneath, plus a rim and a 2 to 8 mm ring hole.

How to make a name keychain

  1. 1

    Add a keychain

Open the keychain generator, or Add, Keychain in any project. A 20 mm high DEPTHUE tag lands on the plate.

  2. 2

    Type the name

Type up to 24 characters and pick a font. The plate grows to fit the text as you type.

  3. 3

    Pick the shape

Choose rounded, pill, circle, dog tag or heart, then set the height, thickness, rim and ring hole in mm.

  4. 4

    Export

Export STL for any slicer, or 3MF. Change filament at the top of the plate for two colour letters.

The keychain is one of Studio's ready-made parts. It sits on the same plate as a sign, a box with lid and a QR code plate.

What you can set

Every setting has a unit and a range, and the plate rebuilds as one closed solid when a number changes. These are the ranges the generator accepts.

How the size works

Letters start at half the plate height and shrink only if they would touch the rim. With the width at 0, the tag is as long as the text plus room for the hole, and never under 25 mm. Some real sizes from the generator at 20 mm high and 3 mm thick:

KeychainSize
DEPTHUE, default font, raised47.3 x 20 x 4 mm
MAKER in Lilita One, raised56.7 x 20 x 4 mm
Maker in Pacifico, 1.6 mm letters49.5 x 20 x 4.6 mm
EMMA on a 30 mm circle30 x 30 x 4 mm

A circle is as wide as it is high. A heart is 1.12 times its height across unless you set the width. If a fixed width or a circle leaves no room for the hole and the text, you get a plain message that says which number to change.

Raised or engraved letters

Raised letters stand 0.4 to 3 mm proud of the plate. They are the easy way to get two colours on a single nozzle printer: one filament change at the top of the plate.

Engraved letters are cut into the plate. The depth is capped so 0.8 mm of tag always stays under the letters, and a closed letter like O never drops its middle. A 3 mm engraving on a 3 mm tag becomes 2.2 mm, with a note.

Raised letters are fused into the plate from just below its top, so no letter can come loose. The generator still checks the result and tells you if any piece is not attached to the tag.

Names, gifts and giveaways

The fonts cover most keychain styles: Anton and Bebas Neue for bold names, Lilita One and Righteous for rounded, Pacifico and Lobster for script, Black Ops One and Stardos Stencil for stencil, Press Start 2P for pixel. Bebas Neue sets capitals only.

For a batch of names, duplicate the keychain in the scene and change the text on each copy. They export together as one file, or one at a time.

QR code keychains

A keychain with a scannable code is a job for the 3D QR code generator. Turn on its keychain hole and a tab is added above the code. A 53 character song link makes a 33 x 33 module code; at 1 mm modules with a 4 mm hole the tag is 37 x 45 mm.

After the keychain

The keychain is a normal solid in the scene. Emboss a date or a second name on the back with the STL editor, add a second hole, or check its weight and print time with the print checks. For lettering on its own, without a plate, the free text to STL tool makes a single file in the browser.

Questions

How big should a 3D printed keychain be?

The default is 20 mm high and 3 mm thick, with 1 mm raised letters, so 4 mm overall. The name DEPTHUE in the default font makes a 47.3 x 20 mm tag. Go thicker than 3 mm for a tag that lives on a set of keys.

What size should the ring hole be?

The hole is 2 to 8 mm across, 4 mm by default. Measure the wire of your key ring and make the hole at least 1 mm wider. The generator keeps at least 1.6 mm of plate around the hole.

How long can the name be?

Up to 24 characters. The tag gets longer instead of the letters getting smaller: 24 characters at 20 mm high make a tag about 144 mm long. If you fix the width, the text shrinks to fit and you get a note when it shrinks a lot.

Can I make a QR code keychain or a Spotify keychain?

Use the 3D QR code generator for that: it has a keychain hole of up to 8 mm. Put a song link in the code and any phone camera opens it. The generator does not make Spotify Codes.

How do I print a two colour name keychain?

Use raised letters and change filament at the top of the plate, 3 mm with the defaults. The letters and the rim print in the second colour. Your slicer's preview shows the layer to add the change on.

Is the keychain generator free?

Free to start. A free account includes 50 credits a month. Adding a keychain is 2 credits, changing its settings is free, and an export is 5, so a finished keychain file is 7 credits. Paid plans start at $5 a month for 1,200 credits.
