What Is Filament Painting (HueForge-Style Printing)?

Definition

Filament painting is a 3D printing technique that reproduces an image as a thin relief printed in several filament colors stacked from dark to light. Each point's height, set by the image's brightness, decides how many layers of each partly translucent color show through.

Also called: HueForge-style printing, color relief printing, layered color printing.

A filament painting looks painted but is printed with ordinary filament, often on a printer with one nozzle. The image becomes a relief a couple of millimetres tall, and the printer changes filament at planned heights.

Why it works

Thin plastic is translucent. One layer of a light color over a dark one shows a blend of both; several layers of the light color hide the dark one. By controlling how tall each point is, and which color is on top at that height, the print reproduces the image's tones. How quickly each filament becomes opaque is its transmission distance.

Planning a print

  1. Convert the image to heights: brighter points taller.
  2. Order filaments dark to light.
  3. Choose the layer where each filament starts.
  4. Slice with color changes at those layers.

The free filament painting planner does steps 1 to 3 with a live preview. VoxelPrime automates it for your own filament inventory. The swap math is explained in how to plan color swap heights.

Questions

Do I need a multi-color printer for filament painting?

No. A single-extruder printer works: the slicer pauses at each color change and you swap the spool by hand. An AMS or MMU only automates the swaps.

Is filament painting the same as HueForge?

HueForge is the app that popularised the technique. Filament painting is the technique itself, and other tools, free and paid, can plan it too.
