Meshmixer Alternatives in 2026: What to Use Now Development Has Stopped
Autodesk no longer develops or supports Meshmixer. The best alternatives for cutting, hollowing, repairing and checking meshes, compared with sources.
The short answer
Meshmixer still installs on Windows, but Autodesk says it is no longer in development and will not be supported. For the everyday print jobs people used it for, cutting, hollowing with drain holes, booleans, repair and simplifying, Depthue Studio does them in any browser, including on a Mac. For sculpting and support generation, Blender with its 3D Print Toolbox is the closest free replacement; Autodesk itself points users to Fusion.

1.Depthue Studio
By Depthue- Price
- Free; plans from $5 a month for cloud AI
- Best for
- Print fixes: cut, hollow, combine, repair, check
Browser mesh editor in millimetres for STL, OBJ, 3MF, GLB and PLY up to 120 MB. Plane cut, hollow with drain holes, boolean, repair, simplify, smooth, holes and embossed text stack without changing the file, with print checks and an estimate. No sculpting brushes and no support generation.
2.Blender
- Price
- Free, open source
- Best for
- Sculpting and heavy mesh work
Mesh modelling and sculpting on Windows, macOS and Linux, with exact, float and manifold boolean solvers. The 3D Print Toolbox extension adds volume, bad-geometry checks, Make Manifold and a hollow tool.
3.Autodesk Fusion
- Price
- Free for personal use; $85 a month or $680 a year
- Best for
- Turning a mesh into a CAD solid
Autodesk's suggested replacement. Inserts STL, OBJ and 3MF as mesh bodies with plane cut, combine, shell, reduce and repair, and converts meshes to solids. Autodesk describes its mesh tools as cleanup and repair, not heavy mesh modelling.
4.FreeCAD
- Price
- Free, open source
- Best for
- Mesh repair inside a free CAD program
Parametric CAD with a Mesh workbench: evaluate and repair, fill holes, decimate and trim with a plane. Mesh booleans need OpenSCAD installed.

What Meshmixer was good at
Meshmixer became the default free tool for preparing meshes for printing: plane cuts, hollowing with escape holes, booleans, the Inspector's one-click repair, reducing and remeshing, smoothing, and analysis for overhangs, thickness and stability, plus support generation. The last help set is from 2019, and Autodesk now says the tool will not be developed or supported further. It still runs on Windows, so the question is less "is it dead" than "what do I learn instead".
The replacement depends on the job
| Meshmixer job | Best replacement |
|---|---|
| Cut a model flat or in two | Depthue Studio (Plane cut), Fusion, Blender |
| Hollow for resin with drain holes | Depthue Studio (Hollow), Blender with 3D Print Toolbox |
| Combine or subtract models | Depthue Studio (Boolean), Blender |
| Fix a broken mesh | Depthue Studio (Repair), Fusion, the free STL repair tool |
| Reduce triangles | Depthue Studio STL simplifier, Blender (Decimate) |
| Sculpt and blend shapes | Blender |
| Generate supports | Your slicer, or Blender add-ons |
| Check overhangs and thin walls | Depthue Studio STL checker, Blender with 3D Print Toolbox |
Why Depthue Studio for print prep
Studio keeps each change as an operation on top of the imported mesh, so a cut or a hollow can be switched off or adjusted later instead of being baked in. Its geometry kernel keeps the result a closed solid, which is what slicers need, and the checks re-run after every change: closed solid, plate fit, overhangs past 45°, walls under 0.8 mm. It runs in a modern desktop browser, so it works the same on Windows, macOS and Linux.
What it does not do: sculpting brushes, free-form deformation with a brush, and support generation. Use Blender for sculpting and your slicer for supports.
Frequently asked questions
Is Meshmixer discontinued?
Autodesk's listing says it has no current plans to retire Meshmixer, but the tool is no longer in development and will not be supported. It is still a free Windows download from the Autodesk Marketplace.
What replaced Meshmixer?
Autodesk points users to Fusion. For the print-prep jobs most people used Meshmixer for, cutting, hollowing, combining and repairing, a dedicated mesh editor such as Depthue Studio or Blender is closer to how Meshmixer worked.
Is there Meshmixer for Mac?
The current Autodesk Marketplace listing offers Windows 64-bit only. On a Mac, Depthue Studio runs in the browser and Blender has a native Apple Silicon build.
Is there an online version of Meshmixer?
No. Meshmixer is a desktop installer. Depthue Studio is a browser mesh editor that covers plane cuts, hollowing with drain holes, booleans, repair and simplifying, and the files stay on your device.
How do I hollow an STL for resin printing without Meshmixer?
In Depthue Studio, import the STL and add the Hollow operation: set the wall thickness from 0.4 mm and up to eight drain holes, which go straight up through the bottom face. Turn on X-ray to see them, then export STL.
