Tinkercad Alternatives in 2026: Free 3D Design Tools Compared
The best Tinkercad alternatives for 3D printing: Depthue Studio, Fusion, Onshape, Blender, SelfCAD and Womp, compared on price, STL editing and checks.
The short answer
Tinkercad is still the easiest free way to learn 3D design by stacking shapes, and it stays the right choice for classrooms. Move on when you hit its limits: imports capped at 25 MB that cannot be cut, hollowed or repaired, no printability checks and no photo reliefs. Depthue Studio covers those in the browser for free. For parametric CAD, step up to Fusion or Onshape; for sculpting, Blender.
Disclosure: Depthue makes the options marked “By Depthue”. Each option is described from its own public documentation, including where it beats ours. Prices change; check each site before buying.
1.Depthue Studio
By Depthue- Price
- Free; plans from $5 a month for cloud AI
- Best for
- Editing STL files and making printable parts in a browser
Browser 3D workspace in millimetres. Opens STL, OBJ, 3MF, GLB and PLY up to 120 MB, then cuts, hollows, combines, repairs, simplifies and embosses text with 20 stacked operations. Gears, boxes, signs, keychains, vases and QR plates from settings, photo reliefs, print checks and an estimate, and an AI copilot.
2.Autodesk Fusion
- Price
- Free for personal use; $85 a month or $680 a year
- Best for
- Parametric CAD for functional parts
Full parametric CAD on Windows and macOS. Personal use is free for non-commercial projects by people earning under $1,000 a year, with 10 editable documents at a time. Autodesk points Tinkercad users here as the next step.
3.Onshape
- Price
- Free for non-commercial use; Standard $1,500 per user a year
- Best for
- Parametric CAD in the browser
Cloud CAD from PTC that runs in a browser and on iPad and phones. Every document on the free plan is public, and imported STL meshes are listed for reference rather than editing.
4.Blender
- Price
- Free, open source
- Best for
- Sculpting and organic models
A full 3D suite for Windows, macOS and Linux with mesh modelling, sculpting and booleans. The free 3D Print Toolbox extension adds checks, Make Manifold and hollowing. Powerful, and the steepest learning curve here.
5.SelfCAD
- Price
- Free; Pro $14.99 a month or $11.99 a month yearly
- Best for
- Browser modelling with a built-in slicer
Browser and desktop 3D modelling with booleans, plane cuts, repair, simplify and a slicer that makes G-code. Sculpting, Image To 3D and deformations are on Pro.
6.Womp
- Price
- Free; Pro $12.99 a month or $9.99 a month yearly
- Best for
- Soft, clay-like shapes and renders
Browser modelling rendered on Womp's servers, with clay-like blending, AI generation and a resin print service. It has no offline version.

Where Tinkercad stops
Tinkercad is built around one idea: stack solid and hole shapes, then group them. That is why it is so easy to learn, and also where its limits come from when you move from learning to printing:
- Imported models are sealed. An STL or OBJ comes in as one shape under 25 MB. You can add to it or subtract from it, but you cannot cut it flat, hollow it, repair it or simplify it.
- No print checks. The help center explains good practice, but nothing tells you a wall is too thin or a part hangs over the plate.
- No photos. Raster images are not imported as geometry, so no reliefs, coins or lithophanes.
- Phones are out. The editors need a screen at least 864 pixels wide.
If none of these get in your way, there is no reason to switch.
Pick by what you are making
| You want to | Use |
|---|---|
| Teach 3D design to beginners | Tinkercad |
| Fix, cut, hollow or add text to an existing STL | Depthue Studio STL editor |
| Make a gear, box, sign or keychain to exact sizes | Depthue Studio parametric parts |
| Design a functional part with sketches and constraints | Fusion or Onshape |
| Sculpt a character or an organic shape | Blender |
| Turn a photo into a relief coin or plaque | Depthue Studio bas relief generator |
Moving from Tinkercad to Depthue Studio
Export your design from Tinkercad as STL. Tinkercad groups every shape into one part on export, so it lands in Studio as one object. From there you can set its size in millimetres, cut a flat base, hollow it with drain holes, emboss a name, check it against your printer's build plate and read a print estimate, then export STL or 3MF for your slicer. Shapes and text you would have built in Tinkercad are there too, and each change stays in an operation stack you can switch off later.
Studio is not a parametric CAD program: there are no sketches or constraints. For that step, Autodesk's own recommendation is Fusion.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free alternative to Tinkercad?
For editing STL files and making printable parts in a browser, Depthue Studio is free and adds what Tinkercad lacks: cutting, hollowing and repairing imported meshes, print checks and photo reliefs. For parametric CAD, Fusion's personal licence and Onshape's free plan are free for non-commercial work.
Is there a more advanced version of Tinkercad?
Autodesk points Tinkercad users to Fusion as the next step. It is full parametric CAD, free for personal non-commercial use, and runs on Windows and macOS rather than in a browser.
Can Tinkercad edit STL files?
Only by combining them with other shapes. Tinkercad imports STL or OBJ files under 25 MB as one solid or hole shape that cannot be ungrouped into parts, so you can add to or subtract from a model but not cut, hollow or repair it.
Does Tinkercad have printability checks?
Its help center gives best-practice advice, such as walls of at least 1.5 mm and avoiding overhangs, and it has a measure tool. An automatic check for overhangs, wall thickness, volume or print time is not listed.
Can I open my Tinkercad designs in Depthue Studio?
Yes. Export the design from Tinkercad as STL or OBJ and drop it on the Depthue Studio plate. Tinkercad groups everything into one part on export, so it arrives as one object you can cut, hollow, add text to or check.
Which Tinkercad alternative works in a browser?
Depthue Studio, Onshape, SelfCAD and Womp all run in a browser. Onshape's free plan makes every document public; Womp renders on its own servers and has no offline version; Depthue Studio runs its geometry on your device.
